The Midyear Culture Check-In: What’s Actually Working and What’s Quietly Eroding Your Team

At this point in the year, most leaders are checking numbers.

Revenue goals. Retention stats. Productivity metrics.

But here’s a different audit question:
How does your culture feel right now?

Not what your mission statement says.
Not what your latest survey measured.
But the lived experience of your people, day to day.

Because that’s what actually shapes your outcomes.

What to Look For (Beyond the Data)

If you’re leading a team, try asking these five questions:

  1. What are we rewarding—performance or wellbeing?
If the answer is both, what happens when they’re in tension?

  2. Who’s emotionally safe to speak up here and who’s not?
Look for silence, not just conflict.

  3. What do people do when they’re overwhelmed?
Do they hide it, power through, or get support? That’s your culture talking.

  4. Is burnout being treated like an individual issue or a systemic one?
Your policies, pace, and priorities will tell the truth.

  5. Who’s leaving quietly and why?
Sometimes “better opportunity” is just code for “I didn’t feel seen here.”

Why This Matters

Teams don’t unravel overnight.

They fray in the moments when no one checks in.
They suffer in the silence between hard conversations.
They start to break when performance is praised but people are barely holding on.

That’s why your midyear audit can’t only be financial.
It has to be emotional and cultural too.

And it starts at the top with leaders who are willing to examine the emotional undercurrent of their workplace, not just the KPIs.

What You Can Do Next

Here’s a practical 15-minute exercise to try this week:

The R.E.A.L.™ Check-In

Ask yourself or your leadership team to reflect on these four prompts:

  • Recognize: What cultural wins can we celebrate so far this year?

  • Examine: Where are we noticing friction, fatigue, or quiet disengagement?

  • Align: Are our values still matching how we show up, especially under pressure?

  • Listen: What have we heard from our team that we haven’t acted on yet?

You don’t need to overhaul your strategy this month.
You just need to stop and look honestly.

If you want a thriving workplace by December, the foundation starts now.
